Shanilka - Cinnamon Citadel
My name is Shanilka Hiruni Fernando. After completing my A/Ls, I joined the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, where I completed four basic professional courses. At the moment, I am also continuing my studies through a bachelor’s degree.
I started my career as a trainee waitress, which helped me understand the fundamentals of service and guest interaction. Currently, I work at Cinnamon Citadel Kandy as a Food & Beverage Service Attendant, where I handle guest service, bar operations, and ensure service standards and guest satisfaction are maintained at a high level.
I feel that safety and skill growth are very important in my role. At Cinnamon Citadel, there is strong attention given to workplace safety, hygiene, and correct service procedures, which makes me feel confident while working.
In terms of skill growth, I’ve had many opportunities to improve my service skills, communication, bar knowledge, and teamwork. The environment encourages learning, and I feel motivated to continuously develop myself professionally.
The training I received at SLITHM gave me a strong foundation in hospitality standards, customer service, and food and beverage knowledge.
In addition, on-the-job training at Cinnamon Citadel Kandy, continuous guidance from my supervisors, and hands-on experience in the bar helped me build real confidence in my role.
Participating in professional competitions also played a big part in my growth. I am proud of my journey, especially being the 2nd Runner-Up at the 30th National Bartender Competition in 2025, which helped me believe in my skills, improve my technical abilities, and grow both personally and professionally.
