Chaithri Kuragama : Acorn Travels
1.Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do at work?
I’m currently working with Acorn Prime Destinations as a Manager for Leisure Travel. My role mainly involves curating unique travel experiences, designing personalized itineraries, and ensuring our clients enjoy seamless and memorable journeys. I’m passionate about exploring new destinations, understanding different cultures, and turning travel dreams into reality. Every day is different in this field, and I love the creativity and connections that come with helping people discover the world.
2.What inspired you to join the tourism industry?
I’ve always had a deep love for travel and discovering new cultures. From a young age, I was fascinated by how travel connects people and creates lifelong memories. Over time that curiosity grew into a real passion, and I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to explore the world while helping others do the same. The tourism industry felt like the perfect fit: it blends creativity, meaningful connections, and the joy of turning someone’s dream holiday into a beautiful, unforgettable experience.
3. Can you share a memorable moment or story from working in hospitality?
One of the most memorable moments in my career was helping a family plan a surprise anniversary trip for their parents. Every little detail had to be perfect from the destination to the smallest personal touches. I remember feeling both excited and nervous because I knew how much it meant to them.
When they finally shared the photos and told me how emotional their parents were, I honestly felt so touched. Hearing that there were tears of joy, laughter, and heartfelt hugs made me realize the true impact of what we do. It reminded me that hospitality isn’t just about travel plans it’s about love, connection, and being part of someone’s most meaningful life moments. Experiences like that stay with you forever and make this journey incredibly fulfilling.
4. How has your confidence changed since starting this role? Explain
Starting out, I was passionate but naturally a little unsure of myself, especially when handling high expectations and complex travel plans. But over time, this role has shaped me in the most empowering way. Every challenge from managing last-minute changes to delivering once in a lifetime trips has helped me grow stronger and more self-assured.
Today, I feel far more confident in my decisions, my creativity, and my ability to handle pressure. This journey has taught me to trust my instincts, communicate with clarity, and lead with empathy. Most importantly, it has shown me that confidence isn’t about knowing everything it’s about growing through experiences and believing in the value you bring to others.
5. What is one of the biggest myths about women working in tourism?
One of the biggest myths is that women in tourism are only suited for supportive or behind the scenes roles. The truth is women are driving this industry forward. We’re leading teams, closing major deals, managing crises, building brands, and shaping unforgettable travel experiences.
Tourism is not a “soft” industry, and the women in it are anything but soft. It demands resilience, quick thinking, emotional intelligence, and strong leadership and women deliver all of that and more.
Breaking this myth is important because it’s time we recognize women in tourism not just as contributors, but as powerful leaders and changemakers who are redefining the future of travel.
